Boston United 1–2 Southend United: Kamara saves the best for last
Sahid Kamara’s first Southend United goal secured a 2–1 victory at Boston United, extending The Shrimpers’ unbeaten away league run to seven matches.
Kamara 90+4′
Boston supplied the opening shock. Southend kept looking for the final word.
Promise Omochere answered Ollie Bostock’s spectacular first-minute goal before being forced off, and second-half chances gave The Shrimpers reason to believe they could complete the turnaround. With a draw edging closer, Kamara found the finish that had eluded them.
Not even a minute to settle
Boston’s 6–0 defeat at Yeovil had made this look an inviting trip. Bostock soon reminded Southend that last week’s score buys you nothing this week.
He moved infield and struck from distance, sending the ball into the top corner beyond Joe Duncan before the opening minute was out. It was a finish worthy of admiration, even from the supporters whose afternoon it had just complicated.
Boston threatened again in the seventh minute, when Nicholas Pozo’s shot deflected wide. The hosts had a chance to make Southend’s task harder before The Shrimpers found their response.
The equaliser arrived in the 16th minute. Duncan sent the ball forward and Kyle McAdam headed it infield. Jake Rooney failed to deal with the bouncing ball, allowing Josh Popoola to deliver with the outside of his foot. Omochere stretched out a leg to divert the cross past Louis Chadwick from close range.
Omochere’s fourth goal of the season was a reward for attacking the space in front of goal. Southend had moved the ball forward quickly, and their striker was where Popoola needed him.
His afternoon ended in the 37th minute, however, when he was forced off and replaced by Zavier Massiah-Edwards. Duncan also had to push Connor McBride’s attempt behind at his near post, but neither side found another goal before the interval.
The chances came. The goal didn’t.
Lewys Twamley replaced Harry Cardwell at half-time and soon had an opportunity to put Southend ahead. Niall Canavan lost his footing as Boston dealt with a ball down the right, allowing Massiah-Edwards to drive into the box and pull it back. Twamley’s attempt was blocked by a recovering defender.
The two substitutes had combined to open Boston up. Massiah-Edwards supplied the run and cutback; Twamley reached the position to finish it. The home defence did just enough to keep the scores level.
Darren Oldaker then curled a left-footed effort towards the far corner, forcing Chadwick to parry. Leon Chambers-Parillon met an Oldaker free-kick with a glancing header, but sent it straight into the goalkeeper’s arms.
There were openings without the sustained pressure that makes a goal feel inevitable. Boston remained competitive, and Southend still needed to turn their chances into something more.
Kamara came on for Popoola midway through the second half, adding another attacking option as The Shrimpers pursued the lead. Harry Taylor replaced Ben Goodliffe and Sam Austin took over from Oldaker in the 70th minute.
Twamley tested Chadwick again in the 88th minute with a low shot across goal. The goalkeeper got down to turn it away. With each opportunity that passed, a draw became a little easier to picture.
Then Kamara let fly
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Kamara received the ball well outside the penalty area and sent his shot into the top corner.
After the blocks and saves, Southend had found a finish Chadwick could not answer. Kamara’s first goal for the club had turned a frustrating search for the lead into an away victory.
Boston had opened the afternoon with a spectacular strike. Southend closed it with one of their own, leaving the hosts barely any time to respond.
The Shrimpers-online verdict
A draw would have felt like an opportunity missed. Southend created enough second-half chances to win, even if they never pinned Boston back for long enough to make it comfortable. This was a victory earned by continuing to look for openings, then taking the decisive one brilliantly.
Dyer’s attacking options made a difference. Massiah-Edwards created a clear chance for Twamley, who later tested Chadwick himself, before Kamara delivered the winner. The value of the substitutions was in those contributions: players coming on and helping Southend pursue three points at 1–1.
There was also credit due at the other end. After Bostock’s opening strike and Boston’s early threat through Pozo, Southend conceded nothing further. That gave the attack time to find its answer.
Omochere’s early departure is the concern to follow up. His availability needs a club update before any conclusions can be drawn, with Berkhamsted next in the FA Cup and Halifax due at Roots Hall on 24 October.
Southend finished the weekend third with 27 points from 13 matches. Four wins and three draws from seven away league games is a return worth enjoying. At Boston, they added to it by recovering from a poor start and making their attacking chances count.
And for the 616 travelling Southend supporters, the best moment came almost at the last. Up the Shrimpers.
