Southend United v Kidderminster Harriers: Friday Night At Roots Hall As The Shrimpers Look For Four From Four
Southend United return to Roots Hall sitting top of the Enterprise National League after three wins from three, with newly-promoted Kidderminster Harriers next up under the Friday night lights.
Southend United couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2026/27 season.
But after Saturday’s slightly chaotic 3-1 victory at Solihull Moors, Kieron Dyer will know there is still plenty to work on as The Shrimpers return to Roots Hall for a Friday night meeting with newly-promoted Kidderminster Harriers.
Kidderminster arrive with four points from their opening three games after recovering from a difficult opening afternoon.
They have already shown three rather different sides of themselves.
They were comprehensively beaten at Hornchurch.
They controlled Eastleigh and deservedly won.
Then they somehow allowed a nine-man Aldershot Town side to equalise late at Aggborough.
So what exactly are Southend facing?
Kidderminster Harriers: One Of Non-League’s Great Names
There aren’t many clubs at this level with a non-league history quite like Kidderminster Harriers.
The club’s roots stretch back to 1886, with the Harriers name itself reflecting the organisation’s even earlier links with athletics and rugby.
Kidderminster became established in the Birmingham football scene before moving through the Southern League and eventually reaching what became the Football Conference.
From there came some of the greatest moments in the club’s history.
Harriers won the FA Trophy in 1987, defeating Burton Albion after a replay, and later returned to Wembley for further Trophy finals against Wycombe Wanderers, Woking and Stevenage.
But if there is one competition particularly associated with Kidderminster Harriers, it might just be the FA Cup.
A Floodlit First
Kidderminster also hold an unusual place in English football history.
During the 1951/52 season, Aggborough staged the first floodlit matches in FA Cup history.
For a club travelling to Roots Hall for a Friday night fixture under the lights, that is a rather appropriate bit of history.
Giant-Killing Harriers
Kidderminster’s most famous FA Cup adventure came in 1993/94.
Harriers beat Birmingham City 2-1 at St Andrew’s in the Third Round before defeating Preston North End at Aggborough.
That set up a Fifth Round meeting with top-flight West Ham United, who eventually ended the run with a narrow 1-0 victory.
There have been further adventures since.
Wolverhampton Wanderers were given an almighty scare in 2003 before eventually winning a replay at Molineux, while Peterborough United were beaten in 2014 before Kidderminster travelled to Premier League Sunderland.
Then came another extraordinary run in 2021/22.
Championship Reading were among three higher-level opponents knocked out before Harriers came within seconds of eliminating Premier League West Ham at Aggborough.
West Ham eventually forced extra time and survived.
Kidderminster’s reputation for making supposedly stronger clubs uncomfortable certainly did too.
Five Years In The Football League
The biggest breakthrough came under former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby.
Kidderminster won promotion to the Football League in 2000 and spent five seasons there.
They eventually returned to non-league football in 2005 and have spent much of the time since trying to recapture their place higher up the pyramid.
That journey hasn’t exactly been straightforward.
There have been play-off campaigns, management changes, ownership changes, relegation to National League North, promotions and another relegation.
And now they’re back again.
Back In The National League Again
Kidderminster returned to the National League for 2026/27 after producing an excellent run during the previous campaign.
The foundations had been rebuilt following major changes during 2025, when former player Adam Murray took charge and the playing squad underwent a substantial overhaul.
An eight-match winning run eventually propelled Harriers towards another promotion.
Paul Wotton was appointed manager in May 2026 and inherited the task of establishing the club back in the National League.
Three games into that job, there have already been a few lessons.
Hornchurch 3-0 Kidderminster
A brutal opening afternoon as three goals in fifteen first-half minutes effectively ended the contest before the interval.
Kidderminster 1-0 Eastleigh
A completely different display. Harriers controlled the game and substitute Levi Amantchi scored the deserved winner after 78 minutes.
Kidderminster 1-1 Aldershot
Lewis Walker put Harriers ahead, but Aldershot somehow equalised late despite being reduced to nine men.
So What Have We Learned?
Kidderminster have four points from their opening three matches.
At Hornchurch they were vulnerable and were punished ruthlessly.
Against Eastleigh they were the dominant team and showed they can control a National League match.
Against Aldershot they again established control but couldn’t finish the job against a side reduced first to ten and then nine men.
There is enough there to suggest Southend shouldn’t underestimate them.
There is also enough there to suggest opportunities will appear.
They Don’t Score Many — Yet
Perhaps the most obvious early statistic is the goals column.
Kidderminster have scored only two goals in three games.
Lewis Walker has one.
Levi Amantchi has one.
That’s it.
They failed to score at Hornchurch, needed until the 78th minute to break down Eastleigh and couldn’t find a second against nine-man Aldershot.
It is still ridiculously early in the season.
But Southend have already scored seven goals in their opening three matches.
That is a significant contrast.
Lewis Walker
Walker looks like one of the obvious Kidderminster players Southend will need to keep quiet.
He started the Eastleigh and Aldershot matches and opened the scoring against Aldershot with an excellent far-post finish from Owen Evans’ delivery.
Kidderminster haven’t created a huge number of goals so far, but Walker has shown he can take an opportunity when it arrives.
Levi Amantchi
Amantchi gives Wotton another attacking option.
He started at Hornchurch and created one of Kidderminster’s better early openings before later being used from the bench.
That worked particularly well against Eastleigh.
Introduced after 74 minutes, Amantchi scored the winning goal just four minutes later.
That’s exactly the sort of substitute Southend will need to remember even if he isn’t included in the starting XI.
Callum Dolan
Dolan has been heavily involved in Kidderminster’s attacking play during the opening weeks.
He has regularly looked to carry the ball forward and shoot from distance, while his delivery has also caused problems.
Against Aldershot he even spotted goalkeeper Nick Hayes away from his line and tried an audacious effort from around halfway.
Southend certainly won’t want to give him too much space around the final third.
David Davis
Captain David Davis brings considerable experience to the Kidderminster midfield.
He has been a central figure in their opening games and helps provide some of the control that was particularly evident against Eastleigh.
Friday night’s game could therefore provide an interesting midfield test for a Southend side that struggled to impose itself consistently at Solihull.
Jack Wint
There is an interesting goalkeeping story too.
Dave Richards started the opening defeat at Hornchurch.
Jack Wint has subsequently taken over.
Against Aldershot he produced a superb penalty save, getting down sharply before reacting quickly enough to smother the rebound.
Southend have already encountered goalkeepers making important saves against them this season.
Wint has shown he is capable of doing exactly that.

The recent head-to-head record is rather pleasant reading from a Southend perspective.

That’s quite a record.
It also guarantees absolutely nothing on Friday night.
The 2004/05 Connection
Those 2004/05 meetings carry a bit more significance than simply another line in the head-to-head record.
Southend beat Kidderminster 1-0 at Roots Hall in September before winning 3-1 at Aggborough in January.
That Southend side would ultimately finish fourth in League Two and win promotion through the play-offs at Cardiff.
Kidderminster went the other way.
They finished bottom and were relegated from the Football League.
More than twenty years later, the clubs meet again with rather different ambitions but plenty of shared history.

Three games into the Kieron Dyer era and the results couldn’t be better.
Altrincham 1-3 Southend United
Come from behind.
Southend United 1-0 Scunthorpe United
Control the match and grind out the win.
Solihull Moors 1-3 Southend United
Play well below your best for periods and somehow still leave with three goals and three points.
Three different games.
Three different tests.
Three victories.
Solihull Was A Warning
The league table looks lovely.
The Solihull performance didn’t always.
Southend were loose with the ball.
They lost too many second balls.
They invited unnecessary pressure.
Solihull missed a penalty.
Solihull hit the crossbar.
Joe Duncan had to make several important saves.
The Shrimpers still won 3-1.
That’s encouraging.
But repeating the same errors every week and expecting to escape is probably not a sustainable plan.
Friday gives Southend an immediate opportunity to tighten things up.
Coker Leading From The Front
Oli Coker has already become one of the stories of Southend’s season.
Two goals in three games.
Captain.
Goals at Altrincham and Solihull.
And an assist for Popoola’s second goal of the campaign at Solihull.
Coker isn’t simply wearing the armband.
He’s influencing football matches.
Popoola’s Start
Josh Popoola has two goals from his last two appearances.
Scunthorpe.
Solihull.
Both have been close-range finishes.
Good.
That’s where you want forwards appearing.
He has shown an excellent instinct for arriving in scoring positions and Friday presents another opportunity to continue that run.
Duncan Could Be Important Again
Joe Duncan was arguably Southend’s most important player at Solihull.
Penalty saved.
Several other important stops.
One extraordinary recovery after his own misplaced pass nearly resulted in a goal from around halfway.
His distribution wasn’t perfect.
His shot-stopping was excellent.
Kidderminster haven’t scored freely so far, but Duncan will know from Saturday that concentration matters regardless of the opposition’s attacking record.
Don’t Let The Table Fool You
The league table says Southend should be favourites.
The early scoring numbers say Southend carry considerably more attacking threat.
The head-to-head record heavily favours The Shrimpers.
And Roots Hall should be bouncing under the Friday night lights with Southend sitting top of the league.
But Kidderminster aren’t arriving simply to admire the view.
Their Eastleigh performance showed they can dominate possession and territory, while the Aldershot result showed they can put themselves into winning positions.
If The Shrimpers reproduce the sloppy spells from Solihull, Kidderminster are capable of making this uncomfortable.
If Southend reproduce the control they showed against Scunthorpe while adding the attacking threat we’ve seen throughout the opening three games, it becomes a very different proposition.

And, as Solihull demonstrated, they can apparently make life unnecessarily difficult for themselves and win anyway.

Kidderminster will be organised.
They’ll have confidence from four points in their last two games.
They’ve already shown they can control matches.
But they’re coming to Roots Hall to face a Southend side with nine points from nine.
