Altrincham 1–3 Southend United: Cardwell turns a shaky start into a winning one
Southend recovered from an eighth-minute setback to give Dyer a winning league debut, with Harry Cardwell helping turn a difficult opening afternoon into three away points.

Harry Cardwell gave Owen Evans no peace and Southend a winning start. His pursuit of the Altrincham goalkeeper created Oli Coker’s goal; his finish five minutes from time made the points safe. Between those two moments, a difficult afternoon became one worth the journey.
For the 801 travelling Shrimpers, that was the reward. Dyer’s first competitive game had begun with Southend behind after eight minutes and struggling to contain the hosts. It ended with a 3–1 victory built on an excellent equaliser, a striker’s persistence and a bench that offered more than fresh legs.
A goal behind, and work to do
Southend had the first opening, Cardwell intercepting Matty Kosylo’s pass before Leon Chambers-Parillon crossed for Charley Kendall to head over. Altrincham’s response was rather more damaging.
Joe Duncan saved Aidan Barlow’s shot, but Tom Crawford reached the rebound and squeezed it home from a tight angle. Eight minutes into the season, the home captain had given Southend something to chase.
Altrincham looked comfortable. Liam Humbles carried a threat, the hosts moved the ball confidently and Southend were finding too little rhythm to make the early deficit feel temporary. Kyle McAdam lifted a chance over the bar, but the equaliser would need an intervention of real quality.
Chambers-Parillon supplied it in the 37th minute. Taking possession on the left, he cut inside Crawford and drilled a low shot past Evans at the near post. There had been no sustained siege of the Altrincham goal. One player had seen a route through and taken it.
The hosts nearly answered before the break. Crawford had an effort deflected narrowly wide, then forced Duncan into a full-stretch save with a fierce shot from distance. The equaliser gave Southend a way back; the goalkeeper made sure they still had it at half-time.
A backheel worth chasing for
At 1–1, the afternoon remained open. Eight minutes into the second half, Cardwell tipped it Southend’s way.
Evans delayed his clearance. Cardwell closed him down, blocked it and recovered the ball, then backheeled into Coker’s path. With the goalkeeper stranded, the captain sidefooted into the unguarded net.
It was a goal to enjoy twice: once for Coker’s finish, then again for the work that made it possible. Cardwell turned a goalkeeper’s hesitation into an assist without snatching at the opportunity himself.
Kamara and Ryan Colclough arrived in the 56th minute, replacing Anthony Hartigan and Kendall. Colclough tested Evans, while Kamara’s running on the right gave Southend another way to get at the home defence.
There was still danger at the other end. Kosylo fired over, and Altrincham appealed when a bouncing ball struck Vontae Daley-Campbell’s arm inside the area. Zac Kennard-Kettle waved the appeals away. Southend had the lead, but no room yet to relax.
Kamara finds the pass to finish it
Kosylo’s second booking, for a challenge on Colclough near halfway, left Altrincham with ten men and 20 minutes to rescue a point. It was a substantial help to Southend, who had already done the work of turning the score around.
Even then, the third goal took some getting. Evans saved from Coker and denied Kamara’s follow-up before the loose ball came off Chambers-Parillon and went over. Daley-Campbell, linking well with Kamara on the right, also forced the goalkeeper to tip a shot over.
With five minutes remaining, Colclough seized on a heavy touch from Charlie Kirk and switched play to Kamara. The substitute worked himself past a challenge and slipped Cardwell through. The striker drove his finish into the far corner.
Kamara had given Southend pace and purpose. Here he added the pass that mattered most. Cardwell had his goal, and the away supporters finally had a two-goal cushion.
The Shrimpers-online verdict
Away wins can make the awkward parts disappear from memory. This one should not. Humbles troubled Southend, Crawford threatened more than once, and Duncan’s save before the interval helped prevent the hosts taking a lead into the dressing room. Dyer has things to address.
What encourages us is that Southend found several answers within the same match. When their attacking play lacked fluency, Chambers-Parillon produced a breakthrough. When Evans offered an opening, Cardwell pursued it. When the game needed finishing, Kamara supplied the incision.
Cardwell is our standout because his contribution reached beyond the final touch. The second goal was a reward for pressure followed by composure; the third completed a centre-forward’s afternoon in which he both created and converted.
There is no need to turn one result into a prediction for the season. The first home league game against Scunthorpe United will bring its own questions. But a long trip feels considerably shorter when your team has recovered from a poor start and won.
Southend gave us reasons to worry in the first half. By full-time, they had given us better things to talk about on the way home.
