Journey Planning
Driving from Southend
The opening-day trip is a long drive, but most of the route is straightforward motorway travel. A common journey uses the A127, M25, M1 and M6 before leaving at Junction 19 for the A556 towards Altrincham and Manchester Airport.\n\nFrom there, follow signs towards Bowdon and Hale and approach Moss Lane from the Westminster Road side. Check live traffic before leaving, as delays on the M25, M1 or M6 can add considerably to the journey.
Do not attempt to drive to the ground from Stamford New Road directly along the town-centre end of Moss Lane. Use the clubβs southern approach via Hale Road, Westminster Road and Moss Lane.
Walk from Altrincham Interchange
The stadium is close enough to Altrincham Interchange for rail or tram travel to be a practical option. Leave on the town-centre side with the clock tower ahead, turn left into Stamford New Road and then take the first left into Moss Lane.\n\nCross the railway bridge, continue past Tesco and go straight on at the traffic lights. The ground will appear on the left as you continue along Moss Lane.
The rear exit provides another simple route. Cross the footbridge, leave through the car-park side and turn right onto Oakfield Road. At the traffic lights, turn left into Moss Lane and continue past the park and mini-roundabout. The stadium will be on the left. Check live walking directions if engineering work changes access through the interchange.
About Altrincham and Moss Lane
Altrincham have played at Moss Lane since 1910, although the ground currently carries the sponsored name of the J. Davidson Stadium. It is a traditional, compact non-league venue, with terraces on three sides and the Main Stand and Family Stand running along the Moss Lane touchline.\n\nThe Robins are well known for their FA Cup giant-killing history, and Moss Lane still has the close-to-the-pitch character many supporters associate with a proper non-league away day. It should provide a lively setting for Southendβs opening fixture of the season.
Away End
When segregation is in operation, visiting supporters are normally housed on the Hale End Terrace behind one goal. The terrace is uncovered, so it is worth checking the forecast and taking suitable clothing even for an August fixture.\n\nThe away turnstiles and mobile food outlet are reached from the Moss Lane side of the ground. For larger followings, Altrincham may also open part of the Popular Side or make a limited number of seats available. Getting There
Altrincham Interchange is the most useful public-transport destination because rail, Metrolink and local bus services all meet there. Moss Lane is only around a 10 to 12-minute walk away, making public transport a realistic option for supporters who do not want to drive all the way.\n\nA rail journey from Southend will normally involve travelling into London, crossing to Euston, heading towards Manchester and then changing for Altrincham. Drivers usually approach from the M6 and A556. The final streets around Moss Lane can become busy, so allow time for the last few miles and do not rely solely on the sat-nav arrival estimate.
Parking
There is very little supporter parking at Moss Lane, so most drivers will need to use permitted street parking or a confirmed matchday car park. Spaces close to the ground fill early, while many of the surrounding streets are residential. Leave extra time, obey yellow lines and temporary cones, and never block a driveway or access route.\n\nNavigation Road Metrolink Park & Ride may provide a useful alternative for supporters who would rather leave the car outside the immediate stadium area and complete the journey by tram. Pubs & Food
Altrincham town centre offers travelling supporters far more choice than the streets immediately around the ground. Independent bars, cafΓ©s and food venues can be found around Shaws Road, Greenwood Street and Altrincham Market, all within a manageable walk of Moss Lane. The King George on Moss Lane is one of the closest traditional pub options.\n\nThe Community Sports Hall bar may be restricted to home supporters when segregation is in force, so do not depend on being admitted without checking the latest match information. Inside the away section, a mobile canteen normally serves hot food and non-alcoholic drinks. A chip shop, bakery and convenience stores can also be found opposite the stadium.
