Carlisle United v Southend United: The Shrimpers Face Major Brunton Park Test

Southend United make the long journey to Cumbria on Saturday looking to strengthen an excellent opening to the 2026/27 National League season.

Kieron Dyer’s side have collected 13 points from their opening six matches, winning four, drawing one and losing one, and travel to Brunton Park sitting among the early promotion contenders.

But the league table alone does not tell the story of Saturday’s opponents.

Carlisle United have endured an inconsistent start in terms of results, but they have already scored 13 goals and have twice hit four at Brunton Park.

The Shrimpers arrive on a high

Southend’s opening six league fixtures have already provided victories, setbacks and one of the most dramatic comebacks Roots Hall has witnessed .

Three consecutive victories against Altrincham, Scunthorpe United and Solihull Moors gave Dyer the perfect start before Kidderminster Harriers became the first side to beat The Shrimpers.

A 1-1 draw at Woking followed and left Southend with only one point from six after their perfect opening.

Then came Yeovil.

Previously unbeaten, the Glovers led 2-0 at Roots Hall after goals from Archie Davies and Luke McCormick and appeared to be heading towards another impressive victory.

Southend responded spectacularly.

Darren Oldaker’s superb free-kick dragged The Shrimpers back into the match before Leon Chambers-Parillon levelled. Debutant Promise Omochere then completed the turnaround, scoring the winner five minutes from time.

Three Southend goals in 19 minutes transformed a difficult afternoon into a 3-2 victory and restored the momentum generated during the opening weeks.

Southend’s season so far

Still unbeaten away

Southend’s away performances have been one of the most encouraging features of the new campaign.

The Shrimpers have collected seven points from nine on their travels, winning 3-1 at Altrincham, repeating that scoreline at Solihull and drawing 1-1 at Woking.

Seven goals have been scored and only three conceded across those fixtures.

Maintaining that unbeaten record at Brunton Park will not be straightforward.

Carlisle carry a serious goal threat

Carlisle have won two, drawn two and lost two of their opening six league matches.

The striking feature of that sequence is Carlisle’s attacking output.

They have scored 13 goals in six matches and ten of those have arrived at Brunton Park. After losing 3-2 to Worthing on the opening weekend, Carlisle responded by beating Hornchurch 4-1 and Scunthorpe United 4-2.

At the opposite end of the pitch, Carlisle are still looking for their first clean sheet of the National League campaign.

That combination has produced entertaining matches and suggests Southend will have opportunities if they can withstand the home side’s attacking pressure.

Late frustration at Boreham Wood

Carlisle came close to taking an impressive result from early leaders Boreham Wood in their most recent fixture.

Stephen Wearne put Rob Elliot’s side ahead on the hour before Boreham Wood turned the match around late on.

Jay Bird equalised before the hosts grabbed the decisive second goal shortly afterwards, leaving Carlisle empty-handed despite leading heading towards the final ten minutes.

The defeat nevertheless offered another indication that Carlisle’s current points total should not lead anyone to underestimate them.

Players to watch

Carlisle’s goals have come from several areas of the team rather than one dominant goalscorer.

Harvey Bunker has enjoyed an excellent opening from midfield, while Miguel Azeez, Georgie Kelly and Stephen Wearne have all contributed to a Carlisle attack capable of causing problems.

For Southend, Chambers-Parillon continues to make an increasingly important contribution. His equaliser against Yeovil was his third league goal of the campaign.

Ollie Coker has also been central to Southend’s impressive start, combining his midfield responsibilities with the added responsibility of captaining the side this season.

Harry Cardwell remains a focal point at the top of the pitch, while the arrival of Omochere gives Dyer another powerful attacking option.

The Omochere question

One of the biggest selection decisions ahead of Saturday concerns Promise Omochere.

The forward could hardly have enjoyed a more influential debut against Yeovil.

Introduced alongside Josh Popoola after 63 minutes, Omochere helped change the complexion of the contest, was involved as Chambers-Parillon brought Southend level and then scored the decisive third goal himself.

That performance inevitably puts him into contention for a first start.

Dyer could retain the same starting attack which faced Yeovil and again use Omochere’s power from the bench, or reward the newcomer immediately.

For our predicted XI, we’re backing the latter.

The tactical battle

Southend’s structure against Yeovil again featured Oldaker operating at the base of midfield with Coker, Twamley and Chambers-Parillon providing energy and progression further forward.

Ryan Colclough operated as part of the attacking unit alongside Cardwell and offers Southend a different type of threat through his ability to move into wider positions.

Carlisle have shown considerably more variation in their structures during the opening weeks, using both three and four-man defensive systems.

The midfield therefore looks particularly important.

Southend cannot afford to allow Carlisle to build sustained pressure around their penalty area. The Cumbrians have already demonstrated how ruthless they can be when matches become open at Brunton Park.

But Southend should also carry a threat of their own.

Carlisle have conceded in every league match this season and The Shrimpers have scored in all six of theirs.

Southend selection

Dyer made four changes against Yeovil and the side which started that dramatic victory provides the clearest guide heading into Carlisle.

Joe Duncan started in goal behind a back four of Vontae Daley-Campbell, Harry Taylor, Dan Cox and Kyle McAdam.

Oldaker returned at the base of midfield, with Lewys Twamley, captain Ollie Coker and Chambers-Parillon ahead of him. Cardwell and Colclough completed the starting side.

Southend made their decisive alterations after 63 minutes, with Rayan Oyebade, Josh Popoola and Omochere all introduced as Dyer looked to rescue the match.

Given the impact of those substitutions, changes at Brunton Park would be no surprise.

The significant change in our prediction is Omochere replacing Ryan Colclough after the new striker’s match-winning contribution against Yeovil.

There is certainly an argument for Dyer keeping Colclough in the XI and retaining Omochere as a powerful option from the bench, so that looks like the most difficult call to make ahead of Saturday.

A proper early-season test

This looks considerably tougher than a simple glance at the league table might suggest.

Southend have been the more consistent team, but Carlisle have already demonstrated considerable attacking quality and Brunton Park has been producing goals.

For The Shrimpers, the challenge is to combine the resilience demonstrated against Yeovil with the controlled football they produced during their opening three victories.

Southend have yet to lose away from Roots Hall.

Maintain that record in Cumbria and it will represent another encouraging result.

Win and Dyer’s side would move onto 16 points from their opening seven league games, maintaining an excellent early pace at the top end of the National League.
