Fixture release and supporter reaction

Fixture release day always gets me looking ahead. The first away trip, the first afternoon back at Roots Hall, Boxing Day and the run-in: suddenly the new season feels a bit closer.

Southend start at Altrincham on Saturday 8 August, with Scunthorpe United visiting Roots Hall a week later. There is a new head coach in Kieron Dyer, a changing squad and plenty to find out about. Now we know where the league campaign begins.

Five games to get us going

Altrincham away will be our first proper look at the new side in league action. I want us to start positively, but the opening month will tell us more than one result can.

Scunthorpe at home follows, then Solihull Moors away. Kidderminster’s visit is a Friday night fixture before the Bank Holiday trip to Woking. That short turnaround at the end of August will ask something of the squad straight away.

Hornchurch home on Boxing Day

The Hornchurch games are among the first I looked for. They come to Roots Hall on Boxing Day, and we go there on Easter Monday. Two local fixtures at busy points in the season should give us plenty to talk about.

A short journey does not make a match easy. Still, after some of the miles this division asks supporters to cover, those dates are welcome.

Different opponents, familiar demands

Barrow and Harrogate Town arrive from the Football League. AFC Fylde, Kidderminster, Worthing and Hornchurch come up from the regional divisions. That gives the fixture list a different look, but it does not change what we need to do: find consistency against the whole division.

Barrow visit Roots Hall on 26 September, with the return on 13 February. Harrogate come to us on 5 December, before our trip there on 17 April. AFC Fylde visit on 3 October, and our first meeting with Worthing is away on 27 October.

Hartlepool at home to finish

The final four bring two home games and two away trips. We finish at Roots Hall against Hartlepool, with a 12.30pm kick-off scheduled for the last day.

By then, we will know far more about this team than we do today. For now, these are dates to put in the diary, rather than games to start awarding ourselves points from.

Dates in the diary. Now bring on the football.

I am looking forward to seeing what Dyer builds. The fixture list gives the summer a bit of shape, but the real excitement will come from watching the players together and seeing how the new arrivals fit.

Altrincham first, then back to Roots Hall. That will do me for now. Up the Shrimpers.

THE FINAL WHISTLE ISN’T THE LAST WORD.
