Woking v Southend United: a quick chance to put Friday behind us
The first defeat has arrived. Bank Holiday Monday gives The Shrimpers an immediate opportunity to show how they respond.
Three wins did not make us unbeatable. One defeat does not make us a bad side.
Kidderminster was frustrating because Southend had such a good first half and so little to show for it by the end. Woking away comes quickly enough to give us something more useful to discuss: the response.
Keep the good parts, learn from the rest
Chambers-Parillon’s early goal on Friday should have been a platform for more. Southend created openings but reached the interval only one ahead, then could not recover control when Kidderminster improved.
We do not need Dyer to rip everything up after four games. We do need to see the side react when the opposition changes the question. If the first plan stops working, find another way to get the ball forward and bring the attackers into the game.
Woking have their own reasons to respond
The Cards have three points from four matches. They lost to Sutton and Gateshead, produced a dramatic 3–2 win against Fylde, then lost 1–0 at Hornchurch.
All three of their goals came in the Fylde victory, and two arrived at the very end. That is a warning against assuming a struggling side will quietly accept its position. Woking kept going and turned an apparent defeat into a win.
Recent meetings have also been stubbornly difficult to separate. The last five finished level. We would happily take a repeat of Southend’s 2–0 win here in October 2023, but history will not do the work for us.
A short turnaround for both squads
With so little recovery time, selection will be interesting. Dyer has attacking options, and this is a chance for anyone brought into the side to make a case for staying there.
The important part is the support around the striker. Southend have created chances in every game; they need to turn more of those periods into goals and avoid letting a narrow advantage become the whole afternoon’s story.
The Shrimpers-online verdict
I want a positive response, not an anxious one. Southend have already shown enough to travel believing they can win, while Woking’s late comeback against Fylde tells us they will need beating properly.
Get runners close to the ball, make the first good spell count and be ready for Woking to have one of their own. A solid away performance would be a good way to finish the Bank Holiday weekend.
