Eastleigh 1–1 Southend United: the second goal never came, the equaliser did

Promise Omochere’s header put Southend in front, but Temi Eweka’s 89th-minute equaliser left The Shrimpers with a frustrating point.

So close to a useful away win, and another reminder of how exposed a one-goal lead can feel.

Omochere finished Colclough’s excellent work in the 24th minute. Southend had chances to add another, including a late counter-attack, but Eastleigh stayed within reach and Eweka’s header made it 1–1.

Colclough supplies the quality

Eastleigh had the first efforts. Josh Lundstram shot over after a clearance fell to him, and Hady Ghandour fired at Sims after Eweka’s header found him.

Southend’s first serious opening came through Colclough. He carried the ball in from the left and forced Nick Townsend to parry his shot, before Oldaker sent a free-kick narrowly over.

Colclough then made the goal. He took possession from Jonny Williams, drove forward and crossed towards the back post. Omochere was unmarked and headed down into the corner. It was his third goal for Southend and another example of the value Colclough brings when he can run at a defence.

The Shrimpers nearly doubled the advantage before half-time. Goodliffe met Hartigan’s corner, his header was blocked on the line and the ensuing scramble ended with Kamara’s attempt turned behind.

The chance to make it safer

Sims tipped Ghandour’s awkward cross over after the restart. At the other end, Omochere had a shot on the turn that went off target before Cardwell replaced him.

Cardwell also had an opening, found by Chambers-Parillon, but his attempt lacked the power to trouble Townsend. The lead remained one and Eastleigh remained in the game.

The late opportunity was particularly frustrating. Massiah-Edwards broke forward with Austin to one side and Cardwell to the other. He chose Austin, whose low effort Townsend smothered. It was a good position from which to find the goal that would have changed the closing minutes.

Eweka finds the final answer

Eastleigh’s equaliser arrived in the 89th minute. Lundstram delivered from the left and Eweka headed into the bottom corner, denying Southend the away win.

There was little time to recover the lead. A night that had offered a strong response to the Barrow defeat ended with one point and an uncomfortable sense of how near the other two had been.

The supporter’s view

The Shrimpers-online verdict

There was a response here. Colclough created the goal through winning the ball and using it well, Omochere supplied the finish and Southend made further chances. After conceding four against Barrow, that gave us something better to follow.

The frustration is familiar. At Woking, a first-half lead became a draw. Here, too, Southend reached the closing stages without the extra goal that their openings offered.

That does not excuse the equaliser. A narrow lead still needs defending, and Eastleigh found the cross and header they required. We should give the hosts credit for pursuing it while asking why Southend could not finish the job at either end.

Six away league games without defeat is a useful record. This particular point will take longer to appreciate because the victory was within reach. Fylde at Roots Hall is the next chance to turn promising spells into three points. Up the Shrimpers.
