Eastleigh v Southend United: show us the response

What needs to improve

The Barrow game was level at half-time. Southend had chances, but once the visitors went ahead, every attempt to get back into it was followed by another goal against.

Colclough’s penalty and Chambers-Parillon’s sixth league goal showed the attack could still contribute on a poor afternoon. The problem was giving it enough security at the other end to make either response count.

We want better use of the ball before falling behind and a calmer response if the opposition has a good spell. That is more useful than treating one defeat as proof that everything has changed.

The Silverlake is a different story

Eastleigh lost 4–1 at Harrogate on Saturday. Their home results are much stronger: wins over Gateshead, Scunthorpe and Carlisle, plus draws with Aldershot and Boreham Wood.

That is a record to respect. Southend will face a side with its own reason to respond after a heavy defeat, and one that has already made life difficult for visitors here.

Jake Caprice and Jonny Williams have recently joined the squad, adding further selection choices. We should judge Eastleigh on the challenge they pose at home, not simply the latest away result.

Help whoever leads the line

Cardwell’s availability remains unclear, leaving a question over how Southend will lead the attack.

Omochere got into promising positions against Barrow and Colclough made an impact from the bench. Austin’s goals at Gateshead also remain part of the selection picture. Whoever starts needs deliveries, runners and support close enough to make possession useful.
