Southend United 2–4 Barrow: every route back ends in another setback
Colclough and Chambers-Parillon twice offered hope, but four second-half Barrow goals ended Southend’s five-match unbeaten run.
A week after six at Gateshead, Roots Hall supplied a sharp reminder that the next match owes you nothing.
Southend reached half-time level, fell two behind and never quite found their way back. Colclough’s penalty and Chambers-Parillon’s late goal narrowed the gap, but Barrow answered both and Dan Mooney supplied the final blow.
A scrappy opening
Seb Thompson’s early cross-shot hit the bar, giving Southend a warning before the match had settled. Austin then sent a ball across goal that neither Omochere nor Massiah-Edwards could reach.
Chambers-Parillon appealed for a penalty after going down in the box, but play continued. Omochere also went down as he tried to reach the ball ahead of Ben Winterbottom and was booked following the challenge.
It was a first half of interruptions and half-openings rather than sustained attacking rhythm. The teams went in at 0–0, leaving the game there to be won.
Barrow take it away from us
The visitors broke through seven minutes after the restart. Rekeem Harper headed in from a free-kick and Southend had to chase.
Colclough, introduced with Kamara and Yeboah, tested Winterbottom after combining with McAdam. Barrow then doubled their lead when Thompson’s effort deflected off Goodliffe and wrong-footed Sims.
Colclough gave Southend a way back. His run into the box drew a foul and he converted the penalty in the 75th minute. At 1–2, there was time to build pressure and ask more questions.
Hope comes and goes
Instead, Barrow restored the two-goal margin. Mooney sent the ball across goal and Oldaker diverted it into his own net in the 84th minute.
Southend still found another reply. Oldaker delivered and Chambers-Parillon forced the ball home in the first minute of stoppage time for his sixth league goal. Once again, the deficit was only one.
Mooney ended the possibility of a rescue four minutes later, finishing Barrow’s fourth. Southend had kept trying to reopen the contest, but could not stop the visitors closing it again.
The Shrimpers-online verdict
The disappointment is not simply losing after such a good away win. It is conceding four times after a goalless first half and failing to make either response the start of a sustained comeback.
There was misfortune in Thompson’s deflected goal and Oldaker’s own goal. There were also moments Barrow earned, from Harper’s header to Mooney’s influence late on. We need to judge the defending across the half rather than explain it all through bad luck.
Colclough made a difference from the bench and Chambers-Parillon continued to find goals. Those are positives, but they do not cancel the need to give the attack a more secure platform.
The five-match unbeaten run has ended. The strong start to the season remains, and Eastleigh away offers an immediate chance to respond. We can acknowledge a poor afternoon without turning it into a verdict on the whole campaign. Up the Shrimpers.
