The Day We Hit the Summit
New Year’s Day usually brings sore heads, empty wallets, and the promise that this year will be different. In 1992, for Southend United, it really was.
On a cold lunchtime at Roots Hall, with nearly 9,500 packed in and thousands of Geordies making the long trip south, Southend United didn’t just beat Newcastle United – they blew them away. By full-time it was 4–0, and the Shrimpers were sitting, almost unbelievably, on top of the old Division Two.
Roots Hall buzzing
From the first whistle, there was a crackle in the air. This wasn’t a plucky underdog hoping for a scalp; this was a Southend side playing with belief, aggression, and a swagger that said they belonged at the sharp end of the table. Newcastle, managed by Ossie Ardiles and backed by a huge away following, arrived expecting to impose themselves. Instead, they walked straight into a storm.
Angell leads the charge
Brett Angell was unplayable. He bullied the Newcastle back line from the first minute, winning everything in the air and finishing with the confidence of a striker at the peak of his powers. His first goal set the tone – Roots Hall erupted, and you could almost feel the belief surge through the team and the stands.
By the time Angell added his second, Newcastle looked shell-shocked. Every attack felt dangerous, every cross caused panic, and every loose ball seemed to fall to a blue shirt.
Jones and Ansah join the party
It wasn’t just the centre-forward doing the damage. Keith Jones, busy and composed in midfield, capped his performance with a well-taken goal that underlined Southend’s dominance. Andy Ansah, all pace, flair, and direct running, added another, his finish greeted by a roar that seemed to shake the old place to its core.
Angell (2), Jones, Ansah – four goals, four huge surges of noise, and one of the most complete performances Roots Hall has ever seen.
Top of Division Two
When the final whistle went, the scoreboard told one story – Southend United 4, Newcastle United 0 – but the league table told an even bigger one: Southend United, top of Division Two. For a few glorious hours, the Shrimpers sat above the so-called giants, the big budgets, the “proper” clubs.
It was surreal, exhilarating, and utterly deserved. This wasn’t a fluke smash-and-grab; it was a statement.
A day we’ll never forget
The season would eventually fray at the edges – injuries, uncertainty, and changes off the pitch took their toll – but nothing can touch the memory of that New Year’s Day. For those who were there, it lives on as one of the greatest afternoons Roots Hall has ever hosted.
Southend United 4–0 Newcastle United wasn’t just a big win; it was the day the Shrimpers hit the summit. A day when the players believed they could beat anyone, the fans dared to dream, and a club from the Essex seaside briefly stood at the very top of the second tier of English football.
It was loud, it was proud, and it was ours – a day we’ll never forget.
