Billy Goodwin

Goodwin came from Manchester United in 1922 when Southend desperately needed goals. He answered with 22 in his first season, helping the club recover from the previous campaign's bottom-place finish and re-election ordeal. A broken leg against Brighton in 1924 seemed to have ended his playing days, but he returned to first-team action in December 1926 and scored twice against Bristol Rovers. He later joined Dartford. Those 91 first-team appearances and 35 goals tell quite a story.
