Irish left-sided midfielder Brian Barry-Murphy joined on a short loan from Preston North End in February 2002. He started eight consecutive League matches and scored his only Southend goal at Leyton Orient in the final game of the spell.
He returned to Preston, later joining Sheffield Wednesday, Bury and Rochdale, where he also became manager.
