Experienced defender and Southend captain Chris Barker joined on loan from Plymouth Argyle in August 2010 and soon made the move permanent. His leadership and consistency stood out during Paul Sturrock's first season, when supporters named him Player of the Year.
He went on to captain the Shrimpers before moving to Aldershot Town in 2013. Barker sadly died in 2020, and the supporters' association later helped establish memorial benches at Roots Hall in his honour.
