Experienced Irish centre-half Graham Coughlan joined Southend from Shrewsbury Town in July 2010 as a player-coach under Paul Sturrock. He soon took on additional coaching responsibility and, following Tommy Widdrington's departure, became assistant manager.

He nevertheless continued to appear for the first team into 2012/13. His coaching and reserve-management work is not counted as senior playing appearances.
