Pacy winger Jermaine McGlashan joined from Gillingham in July 2016. His direct running gave Southend another outlet in League One, and he featured regularly both from the start and as an impact substitute over the following two seasons.

McGlashan made 70 competitive appearances and scored four times at Roots Hall before joining Swindon Town on a two-year deal in summer 2018, reuniting with former Southend manager Phil Brown.
