Romford-born midfielder John Spicer joined Southend in August 2012 after leaving Notts County. His career had begun in Arsenal's academy, and he had also represented Bournemouth, Burnley and Doncaster Rovers. Spicer brought experience to the midfield but his single Roots Hall season was interrupted by a red card against Burton Albion in October.
He made thirteen League Two appearances and two Football League Trophy appearances without scoring, before departing in summer 2013.
