Experienced defender Josh Coulson came to Southend in June 2021 after many years at Cambridge United and Leyton Orient. His leadership was expected to help the Shrimpers settle into the National League, but injuries and competition meant his first-team contribution amounted to nine competitive outings.

In February 2022 he went on loan to King's Lynn Town, where he rediscovered regular football, then joined the club permanently that summer.
