Goalkeeper Mel Capleton had been in Southend's youth ranks before moving to Blackpool and Grays, and briefly to Leyton Orient. He returned to Roots Hall for a short 1998 registration before joining again in 1999. A broken leg in a reserve match interrupted his later Southend years; he eventually moved back to Grays Athletic.
