Southend-born winger Ricky Holmes finally represented his hometown club in February 2021 after a long career at Barnet, Portsmouth, Northampton Town, Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United. Signed late in the League Two survival fight, he offered experience and creativity but could not prevent relegation.

Holmes made fourteen league appearances without scoring before leaving that summer and joining Farnborough, later combining playing with coaching.
