Experienced Republic of Ireland striker Simon Cox signed from Reading in July 2016 and quickly became a dependable scorer for Southend. His intelligent movement and finishing brought sixteen League One goals in 2016/17 and ten the following season, with further goals in the final two years of his Roots Hall spell.
Cox made 172 competitive Southend appearances and scored 45 goals before leaving in January 2020 and later playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia. His Southend spell was one of the most productive of the late Football League years.
