Hard-working midfielder Will Atkinson arrived from Bradford City in July 2013 and became a trusted member of Phil Brown's side. His tireless running, versatility and knack of making the right supporting run were important during the 2015 League Two play-off promotion and the first two seasons back in League One.
He left for Mansfield Town in 2017 having made 173 competitive Southend appearances and scored eleven goals. Atkinson returned to Roots Hall from Alfreton Town in August 2021 for a season in the National League, adding another 35 first-team games.
Across both spells he made 208 competitive Southend appearances and scored eleven goals before joining Boston United in summer 2022.
