A Frustrating Afternoon at the J. Davidson Stadium
Southend United’s unbeaten March came to a halt with a narrow 1–0 defeat away at Altrincham. Despite entering the game on the back of impressive wins over Forest Green and Rochdale, The Shrimpers were unable to maintain their momentum, falling to a 14th-minute strike from Liam Humbles.
Early Blow
Southend started brightly, with Keenan Appiah-Forson testing Luke Hutchinson from distance. But Altrincham responded quickly, forcing Collin Andeng Ndi into a superb save to deny Lucas Weaver’s close-range header. From the resulting corner, Southend failed to clear their lines and Humbles powered home from 12 yards.
Searching for a Response
The Shrimpers pushed for an equaliser, with Joe Gubbins denied by Hutchinson’s legs after a flick-on from Andrew Dallas. Dallas then headed wide from an Oli Coker cross, and Harry Boyes saw a low drive smothered early in the second half.
Tom Hopper missed Southend’s best chance of the game, volleying wide from close range after a pinpoint Boyes delivery. Boyes and Gubbins both forced further saves from Hutchinson, while Coker and Bridge also went close as Southend piled on the pressure.
Late Drama
Kevin Maher made five changes in total, including a debut for Alfie Massey, who showed promise in midfield. In stoppage time, Jack Bridge was booked for simulation after appearing to be tripped in the box — a moment that summed up Southend’s frustration.
Full-Time: Altrincham 1–0 Southend United
A tough result to take, and a fourth straight defeat at the J. Davidson Stadium. Southend will look to bounce back quickly with a home clash against Woking on Wednesday night, before heading to Southport for the FA Trophy semi-final.
