The Shrimpers march into the play‑offs with a statement win at the EBB
Some wins just feel big. This one did.
Southend United rolled into the EBB Stadium needing three points to seal a play‑off place, and for the first time since 2013, we walked out of Aldershot with a victory — a fully deserved, fully earned, fully Southend 2–0.
A thunderbolt from Gus Scott‑Morriss and a cool, stoppage‑time finish from Charley Kendall did the damage before the break, and from there The Shrimpers controlled the night with maturity, grit, and a touch of swagger.
Seven unbeaten. Five wins in six. Play‑offs secured. This team is peaking at exactly the right moment.
A cagey start — then Gus lights it up
The opening twenty minutes were tight, scrappy, and very “April football”. Aldershot had the first half‑chance, but nothing to trouble Collin Andeng‑Ndi, while at the other end Scott‑Morriss twice tried his luck — a drilled free‑kick wide and a lifted effort over the bar after Boyes found him in space.
But when the skipper finally got his moment, he absolutely buried it.
Boyes was fouled 25 yards out. Up stepped Gus. One swing of the right boot, one perfect arc over the wall, and Pat Nash was left flying at thin air. Top corner. Outrageous. A genuine Goal of the Season shout and his 16th of the campaign — from wing‑back.
The away end erupted. And rightly so.
Kendall doubles it before the break
Just when it looked like we’d go in one up, The Shrimpers carved Aldershot open with the move of the match.
Hopper held it, Coker threaded it, Kendall finished it. A gorgeous little slide‑rule pass and a striker’s finish — low, calm, clinical. 2–0. Half‑time. Job half done.
Second half: professionalism, saves, and a red card
Aldershot threw on three subs at the break and had their best spell of the game, but The Shrimpers never panicked.
Nash tipped a Coker curler wide early on, while Andeng‑Ndi didn’t have much to do until the 73rd minute — but when called upon, he delivered. First a strong hand to deny Frost, then a brilliant reaction stop to keep out Warren’s header.
The Shots’ frustration boiled over in stoppage time when Sam Inwood flew into a reckless challenge on Sam Austin and was shown a straight red.
Southend almost added a third late on when Leon Parillon, back from injury, danced past his man and smashed one that Nash pushed onto the crossbar.
But two was enough. More than enough.
Full Time: Aldershot Town 0–2 Southend United
A proper away performance. A proper statement. A proper Southend United night.
Play‑off place secured. Momentum building. Belief growing.
Bring on Halifax. Bring on Hartlepool. Bring on the play‑offs. This team is ready.
