Eastleigh 1–1 Southend United: Late Leveller Denies The Shrimpers Victory

Promise Omochere’s first-half header looked set to send Southend United back to winning ways, but Temi Eweka struck in the 89th minute to earn Eastleigh a share of the points at the Silverlake Stadium.

So close to the response Southend wanted. So close to three points.

For much of Wednesday evening, Omochere’s 24th-minute header separated the sides. Ryan Colclough created it with an excellent burst down the left, and the Shrimpers had chances to build on their advantage.

But a second goal never arrived. Eastleigh grew stronger as the rain swept across the Silverlake, and Eweka’s late header left 616 travelling Southend supporters reflecting on a win that had slipped away.

A point on the road after the defeat to Barrow, then. There was plenty to encourage, but the timing of the equaliser made this one difficult to take.

Eastleigh make the early running

Harry Taylor wore the captain’s armband alongside Ben Goodliffe in central defence, with Jack Sims continuing in goal. Colclough and Sahid Kamara joined Leon Chambers-Parillon behind Omochere, while Anthony Hartigan partnered Darren Oldaker in midfield.

The hosts settled quickly. Jake Caprice’s delivery from the right was only partially cleared, giving Josh Lundstram an opening inside the area, but the midfielder lifted his effort over.

Hady Ghandour then tested Sims from close range. The Southend goalkeeper made the save, keeping the match level through an opening spell in which Eastleigh had carried the greater threat.

Colclough provides the spark

Southend began to find more room as the half developed, and Colclough was central to their improvement.

His firm effort around the 20-minute mark forced Nick Townsend into a sharp save. Oldaker also tried his luck from a free-kick, curling the ball over from distance.

Four minutes after Colclough’s shot, the winger helped produce the breakthrough. He recovered possession on the left, drove forward and delivered a cross towards the far post.

Omochere was there to meet it, heading home from close range for his third goal since arriving on loan from Bristol Rovers.

A chance to take control

Jonny Williams responded with a long-range effort which Sims held, but Southend went into the interval with the lead and could have made it more comfortable.

Hartigan’s late corner caused trouble when Townsend failed to claim the delivery. Goodliffe challenged for the ball and Eastleigh survived the scramble that followed.

It was an opportunity to put a little distance between the teams. Instead, the Shrimpers had to be content with a one-goal advantage.

Southend threaten a second

Neither manager changed his side at the break, and Southend resumed with two promising efforts. Chambers-Parillon fired wide from outside the area before Colclough sent a swerving shot past the right-hand post.

Eastleigh remained dangerous. Ghandour’s cross-shot from the right forced Sims to tip the ball over, a reminder that a single goal offered little security.

Zavier Massiah-Edwards replaced Colclough in the 53rd minute, returning to face his former club. Lewys Twamley and Harry Cardwell followed just beyond the hour, taking over from Kamara and Omochere.

Cardwell and Austin have their openings

Chambers-Parillon produced one of Southend’s best moments of the second half, slipping away from several challenges before finding Cardwell. The striker’s low effort was gathered by Townsend.

Cardwell also had an attempt blocked after being found by Twamley, while Sam Austin replaced Chambers-Parillon in the 72nd minute as Kieron Dyer made his fourth change.

There were chances to settle the contest. There was also a growing sense that Southend would need one of them, with Eastleigh increasingly keeping the ball and pushing the visitors back.

The pressure builds in the rain

The weather deteriorated as the hosts pressed for an equaliser. Aaron Blair tried an acrobatic effort but failed to hit the target, and Eastleigh forced corners as Southend worked to protect their lead.

The home side appealed for a penalty when the ball struck Goodliffe’s arm after his own attempted clearance, but referee James Durkin allowed play to continue.

Twamley sent an effort over after a delivery from the right was cleared into his path. Then, with the match entering its closing stages, Massiah-Edwards carried Southend forward on the counter and picked out Austin.

Austin’s low shot went straight at Townsend. Within moments, Eastleigh made that escape count.

Eweka delivers the late blow

Lundstram sent a deep cross in from the left and Eweka rose at the far post, heading the ball into the left side of Sims’ net.

Southend had held the lead since the 24th minute. With one minute of normal time remaining, it was gone.

Four additional minutes offered little time to recover. Hartigan was booked late on, but there was no winning goal for either side as the match finished level.

Turning point — the final counter and the equaliser

Massiah-Edwards created an opening for Austin which might have secured the win. Townsend saved, Eastleigh attacked again and Eweka levelled. Two late passages of play summed up the evening: Southend’s chance to finish it, followed by the hosts’ chance to rescue it.

616 travelling Shrimpers

The attendance was 2,199, including 616 Southend supporters — more than a quarter of the crowd.

The away end played its part on a wet Wednesday evening. Omochere’s header gave them something to celebrate, but the journey home came with the frustration of an equaliser conceded so late.

The Shrimpers-online verdict

This one will sting because Southend were so near to getting the job done. Omochere’s goal and Colclough’s quality gave the Shrimpers a platform to win, while Chambers-Parillon carried a threat and both Cardwell and Austin had chances after coming on.

The frustration is that Southend could not turn those openings into the second goal that would have given them breathing space. Instead, they were left protecting a narrow advantage as Eastleigh gained more control.

The hosts deserve credit for their persistence. They kept pushing, found the delivery they needed and Eweka supplied the finish to preserve their unbeaten home start.

There was encouragement in Southend’s response to the Barrow defeat, particularly the chances created and the attacking contribution from Colclough. But a point that might have looked reasonable before kick-off felt disappointing after leading for so much of the evening.

A point earned away from home, two more that were within reach. The next task is to turn those promising periods into a complete winning performance.

Up the Shrimpers.
