Hartlepool United 4–3 Southend United

Hartlepool United 4-3 Southend United Match Report 2025-26

Late Fightback Shows Heart, But Damage Was Done

A Dream Start… and Then the Chaos

Southend arrived at Victoria Park unbeaten in eight and looking to carry momentum into the play-offs. Inside 25 seconds, they were in front. Gus Scott-Morriss delivered from the right, Hayes flapped, defenders panicked, and Andrew Dallas bundled the ball over the line for his 17th of the season. A scruffy, ugly, beautiful goal — and the away end erupted.

Chambers-Parillon almost made it two, Boyes fizzed one over, and Hartlepool looked rattled. For fifteen minutes, Southend were in complete control. But loose touches and half-clearances crept in, and the momentum began to shift.

Momentum Slips Away

Hartlepool levelled on 31 minutes. A free-kick wasn’t cleared and Tyrese Sinclair smashed home a first-time volley Mason had no chance with. Southend still created the better chances — Parillon forced Hayes into a sharp save — but the control had gone. The game became scrappy and frantic, exactly how Hartlepool wanted it. The Shrimpers went in level, but the mood had changed.

The Collapse That Cost Us

Maher was forced into a change at the break, with Sam Austin replacing the injured Scott-Morriss. Two minutes into the second half, Hartlepool turned the game on its head. A rare lapse from Harry Taylor allowed Campbell to slide in Alex Reid, who finished low past Mason.

Southend tried to respond — Boyes went close, Austin had a shot blocked — but Hartlepool were ruthless on the break. On 63 minutes, Sinclair poked in his second after a scramble. Eight minutes later, Jamie Miley’s speculative strike took a huge deflection, looping over Mason for 4–1.

From leading inside a minute to being three goals down — a brutal spell that decided the night.

The Fightback That Almost Happened

Maher threw on Cardwell, Bridge, Coker and Kendall, and suddenly Southend sparked into life. On 78 minutes, Sam Austin volleyed home at the far post to give the travelling 168 something to cling to.

Seven minutes later, Austin tore down the right, Cardwell flicked it on, and Charley Kendall produced a brilliant back-heeled finish for 4–3. Now the Shrimpers were alive. Now Hartlepool were panicking.

Kendall went close again, Appiah-Forson flashed one wide, and Southend threw everything forward. But the equaliser never came. Hartlepool clung on, and Southend’s unbeaten run was over.

What It Means

The defeat confirms Southend will play away from home in the play-offs. A frustrating night — especially after such a blistering start — but the late rally showed heart, hunger and belief. One more league game to go. Then the real season begins.
