Northern Ireland international defender Adam Thompson first came to Southend on loan from Watford in August 2013. His performances convinced the Shrimpers to make the move permanent in January 2014. He developed into a regular centre-half, helped the side win the 2015 League Two play-off final and stayed through the following two League One seasons.

Across his full Southend spell he made 120 competitive appearances and scored three goals before joining Bury in July 2017.
