Combative Irish midfielder Alan McCormack first joined on loan from Preston North End during Southend's 2005 promotion run. He returned on another loan in late 2006 and signed permanently in January 2007, becoming a regular in midfield before departing for Charlton Athletic in 2010.
After spells with Swindon, Brentford, Luton and Northampton, he came home to Roots Hall for 2020/21, with his return and January extension confirmed by Southend's official announcements.
