Portsmouth goalkeeper Alex Bass joined Southend on a short-term emergency loan in February 2021 as the club struggled with injuries between the posts. He made his sole League Two appearance against Salford City on 27 February, but an injury cut short his stay almost immediately. Southend then brought in James Montgomery as a replacement, and Bass returned to his parent club.
