Left-sided defender Andre Blackman arrived at Roots Hall as a free agent in August 2019 after a varied career that included spells with Celtic, Plymouth Argyle, Crawley Town and Barnet. His Southend stay was brief and came during a particularly difficult opening to the 2019/20 campaign.

He appeared in three League One games and also received opportunities in cup competitions before leaving in October. Blackman soon returned to regular senior football with Ebbsfleet United in the National League.
