One appearance, one extraordinary afternoon. With Southend short of goalkeeping cover in March 1983, Barrie Delf was called up from Leigh Ramblers' third team, where he had been playing as a striker. He kept goal in a 3–1 win over Sheffield United as Steve Phillips scored a hat-trick; the visitors' only goal was a Colin Morris penalty.
Delf later played extensively for Grays Athletic, but that single Roots Hall match has never been forgotten.
