Scottish left-back Charlie Mulgrew joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2008. He immediately became a regular in the promotion chase, making eighteen League One starts and appearing in both play-off matches, scoring once in the League.

After twenty senior Southend matches he returned to Wolves, then moved permanently to Aberdeen that summer before later enjoying success at Celtic.
