Brighton goalkeeper Christian Walton arrived at Roots Hall on a short loan in April 2017 for the closing weeks of Southend's League One play-off push. He played seven league matches, starting each of them, and kept three clean sheets.

Walton returned to Brighton at the end of the season and then embarked on two successful seasons on loan at Wigan Athletic, later establishing himself at Ipswich Town. His entire competitive Southend spell consisted of those seven games.
