Basildon-born Danny Kerrigan came through Southend's youth set-up and made his senior debut as a substitute during a 1–1 draw at Carlisle United on 2 October 1999. He appeared 19 times for the first team before being released in 2002, subsequently moving into Essex non-League football with Billericay Town, Grays Athletic and Hornchurch. He also played at left-back.
