Experienced former Brighton and Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale came to Southend on an emergency loan from Birmingham City in September 2018. Mark Oxley was suspended and Ted Smith was injured, leaving young Nathan Bishop as the only fit goalkeeper.

Stockdale started three League One matches during his short stint, without scoring, before returning to his parent club. It was a temporary solution to a goalkeeping shortage rather than a long-term move.
