American-born Irish winger Don Cowan joined Southend in August 2013 on a one-month contract after leaving Dundee. He started in the League Cup against Yeovil Town on 6 August, then made two League Two appearances from the bench, at Hartlepool United and Chesterfield.

Phil Brown opted not to extend his deal in September, so Cowan left after three first-team games without a goal. He rejoined Stevenage later that month and eventually returned to Longford Town in Ireland.
