French centre-back Dorian Dervite came on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at the end of January 2009 and quickly established himself in Southend's defence. He started every one of his eighteen League One matches during the remaining months of 2008/09, helping Steve Tilson's side push towards the play-off places.

Dervite returned to Spurs that summer, later moving to Villarreal in Spain, Charlton Athletic and Bolton Wanderers.
