Goalkeeper James Montgomery joined Southend from Gateshead on an emergency loan on 2 March 2021 after Alex Bass was injured. He made four League Two starts during the final months of the relegation battle, without finding a long-term place at Roots Hall.

He returned to Gateshead when his short spell finished and subsequently played for Chesterfield before another return to Gateshead.
