Arsenal midfielder James Olayinka arrived at Roots Hall on loan in October 2020, giving Southend energy and drive during a difficult League Two campaign. He contributed important goals from midfield, including one in the FA Cup, and became a regular despite the club's struggles.

His loan was extended in early 2021 and he finished the season with 21 competitive appearances and three goals before returning to Arsenal.
