Cyprus international Jason Demetriou returned to English football from Walsall in summer 2016 and became one of Southend's most experienced players. Mainly a right-back, he also stepped into midfield and captained the side during the club's difficult later Football League seasons and its National League rebuild.

His service continued through 2023/24, and the club records 260 competitive senior appearances across eight seasons. He moved into coaching and scouting roles after his playing departure in August 2024.
