French centre-half Jean-Yves M'Voto arrived at Roots Hall on loan from Sunderland in August 2009. His promising start was interrupted by a hip injury in September, and he returned to his parent club for treatment in December.
A new agreement brought him back in January, and he finished the relegation-hit 2009/10 campaign with seventeen league outings and two League Cup appearances. His single Southend goal came in the 2–2 draw with Oldham Athletic in April.
He subsequently joined Oldham on loan from Sunderland. An early December report describing just six appearances reflected the injury-hit first part of his spell, not his final season record.
