Experienced centre-back Liam Ridgewell arrived at Southend in August 2019 after a long career with Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, Portland Timbers and Hull City. The former Premier League defender was expected to add leadership to a struggling squad, but his time at Roots Hall proved extremely short.

He made a single senior appearance, starting the home League One defeat by Blackpool on 10 August 2019, before leaving by mutual consent in January 2020.
