Ipswich-born holding midfielder Luke Hyam joined Southend after leaving his hometown club in summer 2018. He brought experience in the Championship and an ability to break up opposition attacks, but persistent injuries limited him to eighteen starts and ten substitute appearances across two League One seasons.

Hyam scored once in 28 competitive games before Southend released him at the end of the 2019/20 campaign. His next senior club has not been independently established.
