Experienced centre-half Matt Heath spent the opening weeks of Southend's 2009/10 season on loan from Essex neighbours Colchester United. Previously with Leicester City, Coventry City and Leeds United, he started four League One games and both of the club's League Cup ties during his loan.

He returned to Colchester at the end of August and later played for Northampton Town and Harrogate Town. Six competitive matches without a goal is the confirmed Southend total.
