Local striker Matt Rush entered Southend's academy as a youngster and made his first-team debut against Sunderland in November 2019. Loan spells with Great Wakering Rovers and Harlow Town had already helped him develop, with further spells at Tonbridge Angels and Chelmsford City following.

Rush played 31 competitive Southend matches and scored once during the club's final Football League seasons and first year in the National League. He was released in summer 2022 and joined Braintree Town, later building a successful non-league career with Maidstone United and Boreham Wood.
