Midfielder Merrick James-Lewis joined Southend's youth set-up after time at Fulham and signed his first professional contract in August 2010. He made his only Southend senior appearance as a substitute in the 4–0 League Two victory away to Rotherham United on 24 September 2011, replacing Ryan Leonard late in the game.
His development also included loan spells at Braintree Town, Bishop's Stortford and Carshalton Athletic. Southend released him in May 2012; he subsequently signed for Colchester United. Those non-league loan games do not count towards his one senior Southend appearance.
