Before, during & after Southend
Versatile Irish defender and midfielder Michael Spillane joined Southend from Dagenham & Redbridge in January 2013, having previously played for Norwich City, Luton Town and Brentford. He brought Football League experience to Paul Sturrock's squad and started nine League Two matches as the Shrimpers contested the final months of the promotion race.
He did not score or make a competitive Southend cup appearance. His short contract ended that summer and he joined Cambridge United in August 2013.
