Irish attacker Roy O'Donovan joined Southend on loan from Sunderland in September 2009, having previously played for Cork City and spent time at Blackpool. He appeared in four League One matches and one Football League Trophy tie, scoring his only Southend goal in the league.

His short spell ended in October and he returned to Sunderland, later enjoying a successful goalscoring loan at Hartlepool United before moving to Coventry City. His competitive Southend record is five games and one goal.
