Promising young centre-back Sean Morrison arrived from Swindon Town on loan in November 2009 and started eight League One games for Southend. He returned to Swindon in January 2010, then moved permanently to Reading a year later.

Morrison went on to captain Cardiff City through a lengthy spell in the Championship and Premier League. The eight-game Roots Hall spell came early in his career and produced no goals.
