Ireland defender Stephen Kelly joined Southend on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2003 and made ten League starts before returning to Spurs in March. Although best known as a right-back later in his career, he recalled playing at centre-half during his Southend loan.
Further loans to Queens Park Rangers and Watford followed before he established himself at Tottenham and later Birmingham City and Fulham.
